Our Community, Your Choice is an annual event brought to you by Breast Diagnostic Center. This people’s choice contest is all about honoring your favorite, local non-profits. Each year, our staff nominates four organizations that truly make a difference in the Federal Way, Auburn and surrounding communities. 2015’s nominees reflect how dedication, hard work and a commitment to changing lives bring about great change. Meet our nominees:
We are part of the nation’s leading dropout prevention organization, working in public schools to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. In Federal Way last year, our site coordinators helped 8,350 students overcome barriers to success, stay on track to graduate, and aim for a brighter future. Nearly one in four students fails to graduate on time in Washington. Communities In Schools offers a solution to the dropout problem. In partnership with public schools facing the greatest dropout challenges, Communities In Schools brings resources and volunteers into the school to help struggling students get back on track.
Many of the young people we serve are facing challenges both inside and outside the classroom. What sets Communities In Schools apart is the way we coordinate a comprehensive range of services to support all the needs of these students—academic and non-academic—so they come to school ready to learn.
FUSION is a grassroots, all volunteer non-profit whose mission is to provide housing and services to homeless families in our community while providing a safe, secure environment as they work toward self-sufficiency. FUSION owns and maintains 17 transitional housing units in Federal Way and NE Tacoma. Our clients come to us from shelters, living in their cars and other difficult environments. They are given the key to a fully furnished, decorated home and generally stay with us 18 months. FUSION contracts with Catholic Community Services to provide professional case management which helps our clients set goals and work towards self-sufficiency. We are pleased to report that 85% of our clients are able to move into permanent housing upon completion of the program.
Funds to support FUSION are raised through an annual summer art event, corporate and individual sponsorships, donors, grants and programs such as “Our Community – Your Choice” sponsored by Breast Diagnostic Center.
The Auburn Food Bank is a volunteer directed organization that provides food, referrals, and emergency assistance to those in need. These services, which are provided year around by a coordinated and systematic approach to the collection and distribution of resources in a responsible and a caring way, will be extended to those living within the Auburn School District # 408 boundaries…which includes the cities of Algona, Pacific, and the newly annexed areas of Lake Tapps and Kent.
The Foundation thrives on the belief that even making a small difference in someone’s life can lead to greater things. There are times in life, when the unexpected becomes the “new normal”. When something that you would never have considered would happen to you or your family happens. And from that moment on, your life is never the same. It is those times when the response of AWF makes all the difference in the world.
Angel Wings has a genuine goal of being able to help those who are “in the middle”. They may not qualify for assistance or be looking for it, but could use some hope. Our website elaborates on our mission and programs, including our Legacy Project and Random Act of Kindness.
